Black History Month Community Activities

Reflection: This artifact is a group of events that were centered on Black History Month. Each one of these events I planned and coordinated in collaboration with an elementary school and an outside community organization or University. Each event furthers the students’ knowledge about the culture and success of American Americans. I plan to use these programs that I have put together within my classroom and maybe even with the entire school I teach at because each event was rewarding intellectually and personally for both the students and the coordinators. This artifact show evidence for standard ten: School/Community Involvement because the teacher fosters relationships with agencies in the larger community to support learning and well-being.

Kids to College

Reflection: This artifact is a program called Kids to College that is funded by Sallie Mae. This is a six week program where college student facilitators collaborate with sixth grade teachers to teach the sixth grader how to get to college as elementary students. This is done through provided study tips, college information, and career exploration. As a college student I participated in this program, and it was a very rewarding experience for the college students and the sixth grader. The students were enthusiastic about college even if they had never considered the thought. It encourages the sixth graders to be intelligent, motivated, and successful like their college facilitators. I plan to use this program in my classroom because it will be very motivating for my students. This artifact shows evidence for standard ten: School/Community Involvement because the teacher fosters relationships with agencies in the larger community to support students learning.

Target HOPE

Reflection: This artifact is an organization that works with high school students. In this program high school teacher collaborate with this organization to encourage high school students to attend a Saturday Academy at DePaul University. At this Saturday Academy the student take enrichment courses in English, Mathematics, African American History, and College Preparatory Seminars. All these courses are supplements to help minority students perform well on the college entrance standardized test such as ACT and SAT. The program now has over 2,000 students that it has helped get into a 4-year institution. Organizations like this and their partnerships with schools are imperative to the collegiate success of American students; specifically minority students who are less likely to successfully pursue college or post-secondary education. This artifact shows evidence for standard 10: School/Community Involvement because teachers foster relationships with agencies in the larger community to support students’ learning.

Donors Choose

Reflection: This artifact is a website for teachers to find outside organizations or people to donate to projects or things for their classrooms. The teacher post a proposal for the donation; donors to give to projects they find most compelling; and then student perform their project and send picture and letters thank the donors for their support. This is an excellent resource for teachers and I am very excited about using this in my classroom because I constantly have great ideas, but not enough funds for my projects. This prevents me from fully demonstrating my innovative pedagogical abilities; however, this website I am even resource to follow through with my projects. This artifact shows evidence for standard 10: School/Community Involvement because teachers foster relationships with agencies in the larger community to support students’ learning
