Interactive Bulletin Board

Reflection: This is a hallway Bulletin Board at Bunker Hill Elementary School. The purpose of this board is to help the second and third grade classes of this school to intellectually develop in their creative writing abilities. The board allows for a competition between these classes in learning 500 most frequently used words in Children's Writing. Many of these words on the bulletin board have no phonetic spelling therefore; the words are challenging for many students. This bulletin board is evidence for standard two: Student Development because it provides the opportunity that supports their intellectual development.

 Reading Diagnostic Report

Reflection: This is a Diagnostic Reading Report that tests a student’s fluency and comprehension levels of reading. In doing this report I earned a great appreciation for teachers because it is very tedious. However, the importance of a diagnostic reading report is exceptional. It tells the teacher which skills the students need to improve, and allows to the teacher create blueprint of what expectations he/she must set for their individual students. I plan to utilize this type of report at least twice in the school year. Once at the beginning and once at the end to monitor my students’ progress in reading. This artifact is evidence for standard two because it helps the teacher understand how a child learns and develops; specifically in the subject of reading.

Classroom Library: Reading Levels

Reflection: This is artifact is the classroom library of my cooperating teacher’s classroom. The library in this classroom was exceptional because it is arranged according to the Houghton Mifflin reading levels. During DEAR time the student select book out of their bin which is color coded with the students names to differentiate the levels of reading. According to the students diagnostic test most of the students in this class move up about 2 to 5 reading levels in one academic year; therefore, this method has proven to be very successful. This artifact is evidence to standard two: Student Development because it provides opportunities that support student’s intellectual and personal development.

Morning Meeting

Reflection: This artifact is morning meeting. In my cooperating classroom the students have social and academic meeting every morning before they start their day. There is a leader (help of the week) guides the students through this meeting. In this meeting they greet each other my saying good morning and shaking each others hand; they share their thoughts or things they have done recently and are allowed to ask each other questions; this is followed by an activity such as telephone or tell a story and add on to it; and it ended by the teacher giving the students a few math problem to solve aloud as a group. This artifact is evidence to standard two: Student Development because it provides the students with a learning opportunity that supports their social development.

Learning Centers

Reflection: These artifacts are the learning centers in my cooperating classroom. In my classroom learning centers were used for many things. Their main purposes were to keep the organization of the classroom and to provide social interaction amongst the students. This happens when the students are given duties to keep these areas tidy everyday, and when they are given activities to perform at these centers. The centers are informational pieces as well with the postings of fact and informative data in each subject. The students refer back to these centers for support with things such as a place value charts or revising symbols charts. This artifact is evidence for standard two: Student Development because it provides learning opportunities that support their intellectual, social, and personal development.

Helper of the Week

Reflection: This artifact is helper of the week. In my cooperating classroom one student is picked in alphabetical order to be helper of the week. The duties of helper of the week consist on being leader of morning meeting; passing out all papers and folders during the different blocks of the day; messenger duties; and any special assistance the teacher may need. I think this is very helpful and I would use it in my classroom for management purposes as well as student’s personal development. The student would know gain a sense of purpose and responsibility, and the other students within the classroom would know who was in charge of all those duties therefore it would avoid any confrontations or unnecessary distractions for other students. This artifact is evidence for standard two: Student Development because it provides learning opportunities that support their personal development.
