Smithsonian Teachers' Night in Washington, DC

Reflection: This artifact is a link to a flyer for an event for Teachers sponsored by the Smithsonian.  It was suggested by a professor to go to this event and it was a very enlightening experience. I obtained many resources for my classroom from the different vendors and museum booths. I also had the opportunity to network with other teachers and principles. I realized that some teachers drove hours to come, and this was very motivating for me to such dedicated people the profession that I am pursuing. I will utilize many of the artifacts and resources I receive that night in my classroom with subjects from European arts to planetary science. This artifact shows evidence for standard nine: Reflective Practice: Professional Growth because the teacher is a reflective practitioner who actively seeks out opportunity to grow professionally

Visiting the Holocaust Museum

Reflection: This artifact is documentation of my trip to Smithsonian’s Holocaust Museum. This experience allowed for me to gain knowledge about the Holocaust as well as plan for any future field trips to this museum. These types of visits and cultural experiences are imperative for teachers and I plan to implement this visit into my classroom by teaching about students about character development. This artifact shows evidence for standard nine: Reflective Practice: Professional Growth because the teacher is a reflective practitioner who actively seeks out opportunity to grow professionally.

2008 NASA Pre-Service Teacher Conference

Reflection: This artifact is information and pictures from the 2008 NASA Pre-Service Teacher Conference. This conference was for minority serving institutions. There were several workshops; a career fair; as well as a poster/lesson planning competition amongst the Universities. We placed first plan in the poster/lesson planning competition which was a great honor. I interviewed with several school systems including Montgomery County; Baton Rouge School System; and many more. I also attended several workshops, the workshop or organizing your classroom being my favorite workshop. Many of the things I learned in that workshop are economical and practical ways to keep be effective with management and organization and I plan to use these things within my own classroom. This artifact shows evidence for standard nine: Reflective Practice: Professional Growth because the teacher is a reflective practitioner who actively seeks out opportunity to grow professionally.

Institute for Higher Education Policy Symposium

Reflection: This artifact is a PowerPoint and picture of a speech on community involvement. This was a symposium for College Administrators that was hosted by the Institute for Higher Education Policy in San Diego, California. I was asked by this organization to be the only college student to sit on a panel at the conference to share my thought and experiences about the "The Role of College Facilitators: How Students Can Succeed While Helping Others." This was a great opportunity to network with many administrators around the country, and to gain knowledge about getting students to college and keeping them their through the many other panelist and workshops that took place. This artifact shows evidence for standard nine: Reflective Practice: Professional Growth because the teacher is a reflective practitioner who actively seeks out opportunity to grow professionally.

Student Retention: Norfolk State University

Reflection: This artifact is a PowerPoint and picture of a speech on student retention. I was asked to speak to the Norfolk State Retention Team about my perspective and experience of student retention. I shared the successes and failures of student retention at the University I attend; as well as my own personal efforts and obstacles in my journey through college. This presentation was very well received. I believe not only did I make some networking connections that would further my career as an educator, but I also think that each and every individual in that room learned a lot from my experiences as well. This artifact shows evidence for standard nine: Reflective Practice: Professional Growth because the teacher is a reflective practitioner who actively seeks out opportunity to grow professionally.
