Differentiated Reading Lesson Plan

Grade: 4th
Subject: Language Arts (Reading)
Standard: 4.LT.-F.5. Explain how the plot, setting, or characters influence the events in a story, using evidence from the text. 4.LT-F.6. Describe a character’s traits, relationships, and feelings, using evidence from the text (e.g., thoughts, dialogue, and actions).
Objective: Students will utilize new vocabulary words; create predictions and inference about a story; and construct responds to theme related poetry.
 
 
Introduction to Lesson:
  • Go over the Vocabulary Chart in the book
  • Split the Students into the upper reading group and the lower reading group
    • Upper group: will look up word in the notebook (If the students finish they should take a book out until the next part of the lesson starts)
    • Lower group: (Jose, Khadija, Raul, Bryan, Dennis, Graciela, Erika)  will go over “How to be a Hero” (in the ELL Book page 5-1) and go over all the vocabulary words with them
    • All student will come back together as a class they will go over the vocabulary words and act them out
  • Following there will be a read aloud to set the tone of the story: “Building Block Read-Aloud”
    • Whenever they hear one of the vocabulary words they learned they should put their thumbs up.
  • Before Starting the story review the purpose and setting of the story
  • Have the student look through all the pages of the story with their partner and make a prediction in their readers’ notebook.
 
Guided Practice:
  • Begin reading the story to the students
  • In their readers notebook
    • P536 #2 stop and jot
    • P539 Stop and Jot by making prediction to what is going to happen next
  • Stop Reading At this point
    • Upper Group: finish the story individually at their desks making prediction and inferences with their post-its using their reading symbols
    • Lower group: (Jose, Khadija, Raul, Dennis, Graciela) will continue the read aloud using the reading symbols that are in the book to make prediction and inferences
    • ESL group: (Erika and Bryan) will listen to the story in the listening center while make predictions and inferences in her readers notebook
 
Closing of the Lesson:
  •  After reading the story the students will remain in their differentiated groups
    • Upper Group: will do chose one question from the “Think about the selection” and answer it in their readers’ notebooks. Then they will complete their challenge activity sheet. Then book page 10 in their reading practice book.
    • Lower Group: (Erika will be added back to the group and after instructions are given Graciela and Raul will do the work individually at their desks) will do chose one question from the “Think about the selection” and answer it in their readers’ notebooks. Then they will complete their challenge activity. Then book page 10 in their reading practice book. ALL this will be done together as a group.
    • ALL WORK NOT FINISHED IS HOMEWORK (explain extra homework to the lower group from ELL book “How to be a Hero” assignment)
