Differentiated Math Lesson Plan

Page history last edited by howardgurl2007@... 16 years ago
Grade: 4
Subject: Math
Unit: 6.2 Partial Quotients Division Algorithm
Standard: 4.NSO-C.20. Demonstrate understanding of and the ability to use the conventional algorithm for division of up to 3 digit whole numbers with a single digit divisor (with or without remainders). Divide up to a 3 digit whole number with a single divisor accurately and efficiently. Interpret any remainders.

Objective: To Introduce and practice a “low stress” division algorithm.

Introduction to lesson:
Ø      Mental Math
Ask the student to mentally solve the following:
 10 [9s] = ?, 30 [8s]=?, 20 [40s]=?

Ø      Math Message
Ø      Have students solve the following problem in their math composition books:
How many days are there in 30 weeks?
How many weeks are there in 98 days?

Math message is discussed as a class
Guided Instruction
Ø      Whole-class begins with an equal-grouping division problem which is as follows: Amy is 127 days older than Bob. How many weeks older is Amy?
Ø      Solve this problem together as a class using partial quotients
Ø      For additional practice students will open Math Journals to page 150
First problem do with partner then check as a class
Second problem do individually, then check with partner, them check as a         class
Third problem do individually then check as a class
Fourth problem do individually then check as a class

Closing of Lesson
Ø      Students will go to their desks and do Math Box 6.2
Ø      When done the students will go to their assigned tables to play the place value game (Review is needed with place values)
Ø      When everyone is done with Math box 6.2, handout homework, do the first problem with partner then check as a class
Ø      Asks if everyone understands, then dismiss

Special Needs Accommodations
The two students that struggle the most will leave the group when additional practice is given to the whole class. They will have a worksheet packet with basic multiplication and division practice as well as practice with finding multiples. During the closing of the lesion they will do the same Math Box 6.2 as the rest of the class; however their homework will be more basic multiplication and division practice.
